Canada: immigration pushes population over the 40 million mark

A new chapter has opened in Canada’s history, as the country’s population has just surpassed the significant milestone of 40 million, according to data from Statistics Canada. This remarkable advance, revealed by the agency’s demographic clock, illustrates the constant evolution of Canada’s demographic landscape, thanks mainly to immigration.

This is an important milestone for Canada,” said Anil Arora, Chief Statistician at Statistics Canada. It’s a clear sign that Canada remains a dynamic, welcoming country full of potential. The spectacular increase in Canada’s population is largely attributed to international migration, which accounted for 96% of the growth recorded in 2022.

Laurent Martel, Director of the Demography Centre at Statistics Canada, pointed out that one million people arrived in Canada last year. The year 2022 also stood out as the first in which Canada welcomed more temporary immigrants than permanent residents. This trend is partly attributed to the efforts made by several governments to address labor shortages.

The current population growth rate is 2.7%, the highest level since 1957, when immigration and the baby-boom led to a 3.3% increase in the Canadian population.
