Egyptian government imposes additional restrictions on Canadian travelers

Starting this Sunday, September 3, Canadian passport holders will need a visa to enter Egypt. From now on, Canadian nationals planning to travel to Egypt will have to go to the embassy or consulate of this Maghreb country in Canada to apply for a visa before leaving their country, according to the World Affairs Canada web page on Egypt.

Until now, Canadian travelers had the option of obtaining their visa on arrival at Cairo airport, or even electronically through an online portal.

From Friday, Canadian citizens who also hold Egyptian nationality will also need to apply for a visa to enter the country. Prior to this reform, Canadian nationals holding an Egyptian passport, national identity card or birth certificate could enter Egypt without a visa.

Nearly 300,000 Egyptians reside in Canada, and the majority of them travel with their Canadian passport because they have not renewed their Egyptian passport or do not have a national identity card, said Adel Boulos, President of the Egyptian Canadian Business Network.

People travelling with their Canadian passport because their Egyptian passport has expired or is missing, or for any other reason, will therefore be forced to obtain a visa.
